Our Vision for Family Communication
As an EL Education school, we use the EL Education Core Practices to guide our work. At Launch, families are key partners in the education of their children. Staff members make families welcome, value their contributions and backgrounds, and engage them actively in the life of the school.
- Leaders and teachers explicitly recognize that families care about their children’s education, bring strengths, and add value to the community.
- Leaders and teachers communicate with families regularly and respectfully and provide multiple ways to contribute to the academic and social life of the school.
- Leaders and teachers encourage families to be strong partners in their children’s learning.
Clear and detailed communication is always a priority at Launch. Through both formal and informal structures we ask for our families their voice in decision making. Launch families feel comfortable speaking up and offering their input because they know that we value it and use it to guide our programs.
Launch communicates with families in many ways including via email, text message, robo calls, our Family Webinar Series, our website and personal phone calls.
At Launch parents are our partners. We have formed trusting relationships which lead to meaningful input and feedback. We include family voice in decision making by asking for feedback in many different ways including surveys, committee meetings, 1-1 calls and focus groups.

Good Afternoon Launch Families,
WELCOME TO OUR FIRST FAMILY MEMO OF THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR!
This past week, our entire Launch staff has been getting prepared for a year of thriving. Our annual goal is designed to welcome all students and to create an equity-driven, meaningful and rigorous EL education:
Every student can thrive in school because they feel like they belong and can succeed.
This goal starts with our belief in the notion of Ubuntu and the spirit of Crew that have lifted us up over the past 18 months. If you are new to the Launch Crew, we welcome you and can’t wait to see you in person! If you are returning to Launch for the 2021-2022 school year, we hope you are getting ready for a year like none other full of #LaunchPride!
The Parent Association would like to thank all of the parents who attended the first Parent Circle this week. #Ubuntu #ParentsarePartners
WELCOME WEEKS - ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY
Moday, August 23rd - Friday September 3rd: WELCOME WEEKS.
-
8:00am - 1:00pm, breakfast and lunch provided. Attendance required.
Welcome weeks are a two-week community building period where the focus is on building relationships and a sense of belonging. We believe that when students feel like they belong at school, they are able to make tremendous academic growth and reach high levels of academic achievement. Students will learn about our community, restorative justice and mindfulness. Students will also learn about a variety of enrichment programs we offer this year including art, PE, Asase Yaa dance and drumming and Launch Clubs. They will also be taking MAP screening assessments in the second week that will give us information about how to support them best as we start academic classes.
ARRIVAL ON MONDAY
Moday, August 23rd 7:40am - 8:00am
Arrival on Monday and everyday will be through the schoolyard. Please enter the schoolyard on Bergen Street.
We have two plans for arrival given the high chance of rain.
-
If there is no rain, we will welcome students and do check-in outside in the schoolyard.
-
If it is raining, students will still enter through the yard, but we will do check-in for students in the common spaces on the first floor of the building (cafeteria, auditorium and gym).
-
Due to Covid-19 we will not be able to welcome families in the building. If it’s raining when you leave your house, please prepare to drop your child off in the schoolyard. Several staff members will be outside to support.
-
BACK-TO-SCHOOL AFTERNOON
Save the date! Thursday, September 2nd 3:00pm - 4:00pm in the Launch Schoolyard.
What to Expect: You will get a chance to meet your child’s teachers, learn about the curriculum, pick up materials including the Family Handbook, class syllabi, a staff contact sheet and more. We will have music and some fun outdoor activities. At Launch parents are our partners and typically we plan events outside of the work day. Due to Covid-19 we are not able to host an in-person event after the work day - we hope you will still be able to attend. We look forward to meeting you face-to face in a safe way.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITY
Due to a number of recent changes related to vaccine mandates, RCMT, the agency we use to staff our Para Professionals, is currently looking to hire Paras. They are looking for vaccinated individuals who are interested in supporting members of one of our City’s most valuable and vulnerable populations...students with disabilities who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). These students need Paras who are dependable and consistent, who are dedicated to ensuring that students get the services and support they need, and who are exceptional communicators open to feedback.
Coupled w/this great opportunity is the strong possibility that some applicants will be assigned to work with students at Launch. While I cannot answer questions regarding salary, I do know the following:
-
Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or GED, passing a background check, and being older than 18 years of age.
Please reach out if you are interested in applying for a position as a Para. I can provide you with next steps for how to proceed in the process.

DRUG, ALCOHOL, AND TOBACCO FREE ZONE
This week at our community meetings, I spoke to all students about the health and safety risks of engaging in any activity with drugs, alcohol and tobacco. While this is not a problem at Launch, we are preemptively talking with students about our policies so that they are aware that we are a safe school environment. We expect our students to tell a trusted adult if they know of any drug, alcohol, or tobacco use or distribution in our community so we can respond immediately.
TIK TOK - PLEASE TALK WITH YOUR CHILD
Tik Tok challenges that have been circulating on social media that are trying to influence students across the country to do monthly damage and harm to their school communities. The challenges involve vandalism, truancy, theft, and acts of physical violence and disrespect to fellow students and adults.
You are our partners - please collaborate with us by reading the letter backpacked home today, talking to your child and please reach out if your child shares any info with you related to Tik Tok challenges. Please monitor your child’s social media consumption with continued vigilance and talk to them about their social media usage. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Our community is place of integrity, stewardship and kindness and we WILL NOT TOLERATE any of these acts – whether performed during the assigned month or outside of it.

Family Memo - 11/05/2021
Good Afternoon Launch Families,
Happy Friday on behalf of our entire Launch community! It’s already November and the weather is starting to get colder. Please remind your child to stay warm outside so that we can avoid catching colds!
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Today, our Bioreference Covid-19 Testing Team found ONE case of Covid-19 in an 8th grade classroom. As our partners, we always want to be transparent with you about how we are handling health and safety at Launch.
-
We stay in the same class groups all day long - that means most students have not been near the case at all.
-
We contact ALL families in the affected class group - if you DIDN’T hear from us directly, that means your child is NOT in the class. For example, if you have a 6th grader, we would not contact you since your child is not in the same class.
-
We let our staff know.
-
According to DOE guidelines and our classroom setup at Launch, students SHOULD NOT be considered close contacts with an isolated Covid-19 case. That said, we take additional precautions and investigate if there are any classmates who we should also quarantine.
FAQS:
I was not contacted. Is my child in the same class?
-
6th grade and 7th grade and Multi-Subject - NO. Your child is NOT in the same class.
-
8th grade - only 8.3 families have been contacted. The other two classes do not mix with this group in any way to be considered close contacts.
Should I get my child tested?
If you feel that you want to get your child tested, we highly encourage you to do so.
How can I support my child in staying safe and healthy?
-
MASKS. We must work together to remind and reinforce MASK WEARING at all times with our children. MASKS ARE MANDATED AT SCHOOL.
-
VACCINATION. While this is a personal decision of the parent, vaccinations are strongly encouraged by the DOE and public health officials. The vaccine for students age 5-11 is now available. Our school building will be having another vaccine pop-up on Wednesday, November 10th from 12:30-4:00. Please see info below.
VETERAN’S DAY, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11 <NO SCHOOL>
Please make arrangements for your child. We will be back in school on Friday, November 12. NO ZOOM. NO ASYNCHRONOUS WORK.

Good Afternoon Launch Families,
Hope you have all had a wonderful week! Thank you to everyone who attended our PA meeting this past Tuesday and to all families who participated in the Double Good fundraiser!
This week we have found a positive Covid-19 case in our school community, again in 8th grade. We have contacted ALL AFFECTED FAMILIES. If you have not heard from us, please know that your child is not in the same class. Out of an abundance of caution, we are having any potential unvaccinated close contacts stay home for asynchronous learning for 7 full school days. In order to return to school any quarantined students must submit a negative Covid test. The health and safety of our community is our #1 priority.
FAQS:
I was not contacted. Is my child in the same class?
-
No. Your child is not in the same class. We have contacted and connected with ALL families.
Should I get my child tested?
If you feel that you want to get your child tested, we highly encourage you to do so.

-

Vaccinated students will rarely have to quarantine (only in the case of a full grade or school closure). Please keep this in mind as you consider whether or not your child will be getting the vaccine.

Family Memo - 11/24/2021
Good Afternoon Launch Families,
We hope you are gearing up to enjoy your family time over this short Thanksgiving break. Thank you to everyone who participated in our SLC process over the past few days. Our students’ reflections were thoughtful and purposeful and their goals were aspirational!
We are pleased to report that this week 100% of our COVID-19 tests came back negative. If your child does not feel well, please keep them at home and notify the main office. #masks #staysafeandhealthy #ubuntu
DISMISSAL
If your child self-dismisses on any day of the week, please reinforce with them to go straight home. We need ALL students to head home the moment they step out of the building to ensure their own SAFETY. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated!
RETURN CHROMEBOOKS ON MONDAY
Please remind your child to return their chromebook, headphones and chargers to school THIS MONDAY, 11/29. Thank you!
MAP GROWTH SCIENCE ASSESSMENT - Thursday, 12/2 and Friday, 12/3
All Launch students in grades 6-8 will be taking the MAP Growth Science Assessment in their science classrooms on Thursday and Friday of next week. The MAP Growth Science Assessment is very similar to the ELA and Math assessments that students have already taken. They will give us useful data on supporting all students to make progress in their science classes and ultimately to prepare for the 8th grade NYS Science Exam.
MAP Growth Science Assessment results will be shared with students and families once all students have completed their tests.
ASASE YAA **NEW TRIMESTER**
Students will begin the second trimester of Asase Yaa dance and drumming classes this week.
GRADING UPDATE: Now that students have had a full trimester to acclimate to the Asase Yaa programming, we will be grading students on a weekly basis around their participation in dance or drumming class. Students will receive a 1-4 participation grade on their report card based on full positive participation in Asase Yaa class. Many high schools have expressed interest in seeing more arts programming for middle schoolers and we want to ensure that Launch students are presenting the strongest report cards possible. Acknowledging the arts training that students receive at Launch will support them in pursuing acceptance into a wider range of high schools.

Family Memo - 12/17/2021
Good Afternoon Launch Families,
We hope this email finds you well and in good spirits. Thank you to ALL Launch families and students who came to pick up their tech today!
Although we did have an uptick in reported COVID cases this week, our school-sponsored COVID-19 tests all came back 100% negative.
Attached is an important letter from the NYC Department of Health and and Mental Hygiene. Please read the entire letter. Below is an excerpt that Launch strongly agrees with:
“We know that COVID-19 delta and omicron variants may be on your mind and we want to make it clear that the health and safety of children, families, and school staff is our highest priority. Vaccination is our best tool in maintaining safer schools and defending against COVID-19. If you have a child who is age 5 or older and not yet vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to get them vaccinated as soon as possible with the Pfizer vaccine (the only vaccine authorized for children ages 5-17).
As a reminder, if your child is fully vaccinated, they do not need to quarantine and miss school if exposed to a person with COVID-19. As long as your child is fully vaccinated (meaning that it has been at least 2 weeks since the second COVID-19 vaccine shot) and does not have COVID-19 symptoms, they can attend in-person school after being exposed.”
If your child is not yet vaccinated, we respectfully urge you to consider vaccination.
DECEMBER BREAK
Launch will be on December Break from Monday, December 20 THRU Monday, January 3. The first day back for students will be Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Students will receive break work and computers will be sent home on our last day of school prior to the break (this coming Friday).

CELL PHONE COLLECTION
Over the start of the Winter, we have noticed that, increasingly, students are not turning in their cell phones at the start of the day. We want to reiterate Launch’s school policy as published in the handbook that families signed off on at the start of the school year.
To that end, upon return from vacation, we will be collecting student phones more vigilantly at the start of the day and returning them at the end of day.
If you want to reach your child please call the main office OR text or call their Crew advisor. If your child wants to reach out to you, they can request to call from the main office or their Crew advisor’s phone.
From the handbook:
Cell Phones
Cell phones create a significant distraction from learning. Research has shown that the presence of cell phones, even when turned off, silenced or stored nearby in a book bag can significantly interfere with a student’s learning, and that actual physical separation from the phone is the only effective way to overcome this distraction. Our goal is to create a learning environment in which all students are fully present and engaged in learning throughout the day. For this reason, all Launch students turn in their cell phones each day upon arrival to be stored securely in their homeroom. Students’ phones are returned at the end of the day.
RENEWAL AND EXPANSION
We hope you saw the email from Ms. Rubin with exciting news! The New York State Board of Regents granted Launch a five year full term renewal and the opportunity to open a high school at Floyd Bennett Field. Our current plan is to open the high school in two years, in the fall of 2024. This timeline is contingent upon meeting requirements with the National Park Service where the school will be located.
Thank you to Ms. Davis, Ms. Ward-Mitchell and the rest of the Parent Association for drafting a letter in support of Launch's renewal and expansion and to all of the 100+ parents who signed it. Your voice helped us achieve this exciting goal!
COVID TESTING DURING BREAK
All students have received 2 At-Home test kits today, February 18. All students MUST take ONE of their COVID tests on Sunday, February, 27 before returning on Monday, February 28. Families can keep the second test for future and/or personal use.

UPDATED OUTDOOR MASK POLICY
The New York City Department of Education announced today a change in the outdoor mask policy. Launch will follow the updated DOE mask policy outlined below.
Beginning on Monday, February 28, masks or face coverings are optional when outside on school grounds. Masks will still be required for all students, staff, and visitors inside schools. We will continue to maintain strict COVID-19 protocols, including increased ventilation, distancing when possible, a daily screener to make sure those with symptoms do not come to school, and test kit distribution.
As a reminder, vaccination is the best tool we have to fight COVID-19 and to keep our schools safe for all our students. Children ages 5 and older are eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. If your child is eligible but not yet vaccinated against COVID-19, you can make an appointment for vaccination at vaccinefinder.nyc.gov or call 311 to find a vaccine site near you. The vaccine is free for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration or insurance status. We thank you for your continued partnership.

If you want to reach your child please call the main office OR text or call their Crew advisor. If your child wants to reach out to you, they can request to call from the main office or their Crew advisor’s phone.

Family Memo - 03/04/2022
Good afternoon, Launch Families -
It’s officially March! We now have 3.5 months of learning left in the school year and many important days and events coming up! Please be sure to follow up on your child’s grades and academic progress to ensure they will be ready for success in the grade ahead!
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We are pleased to report that this week 100% of our COVID-19 tests came back negative. THANK YOU, Launch community for helping our community stay safe and healthy!
MASKING AT SCHOOL
You may have heard that today, Mayor Adams’ office announced that it will ease some COVID-19 protocols in NYC schools. To the greatest extent possible, Launch follows the DOE in its COVID-19 policies. In order to maintain the safety of all staff and students, we will continue to maintain increased ventilation, the daily health screening form, and COVID-19 home test kit distribution.
Here is what’s changing effective March 7 and what will remain the same:
Face Coverings
NEW: Effective March 7, face coverings will become optional, indoors and outdoors, on NYC public school grounds and on school buses, for all K-12 students and staff with a few exceptions. Please note that while wearing a face covering will no longer be required, anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so; face coverings will continue to be available through the school’s custodian engineer. Face coverings are still required or recommended in the following scenarios:
Face coverings are required:
Face coverings after return from 5-day isolation: Anyone returning on Day 6 after a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or after having COVID-19 symptoms without testing is still required to wear a well-fitting mask at all times on school property through Day 10.
Face coverings for Early Childhood programs: The indoor mask mandate is still active for LYFE, EarlyLearn (Infants & Toddlers), 3-K, Pre-K, and 4410 classrooms. Children two years old and older, and all staff in these classrooms, must continue to follow the same face covering requirements whether they are in a district school, CBO, or home-based program. Since children under the age of five are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, face coverings remain our strongest defense against COVID-19 for early childhood populations.
Face coverings in medical rooms/nurses’ offices: Wearing a face covering is still required in medical rooms/nurses’ offices, as well as in School Based Health Centers. Nurses will have masks on hand for anyone entering who needs one.
Face coverings are strongly recommended:
Face coverings following exposure: It is strongly recommended that face coverings be worn when an individual has been exposed or potentially exposed to COVID-19 (in the same room for 15 minutes or longer with a person who tested positive for COVID-19). This face covering should be well-fitting and should be worn for 10 days after the known exposure.
Social Distancing
NEW: There are no requirements for social distancing in public spaces, including classrooms, cafeterias and auditoriums, unless the person is returning from isolation. As per NYS guidance, those that are required to still wear face coverings due to returning from isolation should distance when they have to remove their mask for eating.
Visitor Policy
NEW: A face covering is now optional for visitors.
All visitors wishing to enter DOE school buildings must continue to show proof of having at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, show identification, and complete the daily health screening form.
Reporting Cases to the Situation Room
Should a student or staff member feel ill during the day or test positive for COVID-19, the protocols and procedures remain the same. Schools will continue to report positive cases to the Situation Room.
Student Vaccine Requirements
High-risk extracurricular activities will still require participants to be fully vaccinated. High-risk sports include football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse (boys), stunt, and rugby. High-risk extra-curricular activities include chorus, musical theater, dance/dance team, band/orchestra, marching band, and cheerleading/step teams/flag team.
Any student attending a dance or prom must be fully vaccinated.
8th Grade families, please be advised that your child MUST be FULLY VACCINATED with both the first and second shots in order to attend our prom on June 17, 2022. No exceptions will be made.
