Our Vision for Family Communication
As an EL Education school, we use the EL Education Core Practices to guide our work. At Launch, families are key partners in the education of their children. Staff members make families welcome, value their contributions and backgrounds, and engage them actively in the life of the school.
Leaders and teachers explicitly recognize that families care about their children’s education, bring strengths, and add value to the community.
Leaders and teachers communicate with families regularly and respectfully and provide multiple ways to contribute to the academic and social life of the school.
Leaders and teachers encourage families to be strong partners in their children’s learning.
Clear and detailed communication is always a priority at Launch. Through both formal and informal structures we ask for our families their voice in decision making. Launch families feel comfortable speaking up and offering their input because they know that we value it and use it to guide our programs.
Launch communicates with families in many ways including via email, text message, robo calls, our Family Webinar Series, our website and personal phone calls.
At Launch parents are our partners. We have formed trusting relationships which lead to meaningful input and feedback. We include family voice in decision making by asking for feedback in many different ways including surveys, committee meetings, 1-1 calls and focus groups. Launch formed a School Reopening Family Advisory Committee to work with our leadership team to help create and give feedback on all reopening plans and ideas. The group was open for any interested parent to join and consists of a group that represents all three grades and the diverse demographics of our families. Any family who would like to join is welcome!
The Parent Advisory Committee Role:
select which model and schedule would meet families needs
craft, circulate and analyze data from our School Reopening Survey
present school reopening survey data at a parent webinar about reopening
provide feedback on Launch family communication structures
talk with our current families to answer questions and share their perspective
walk through the building to help us plan for the health and safety of our students
The Launch Family memo is sent out weekly on Friday via email. The memos are linked below so that families can translate the memo into any language of their choice.
Welcome to our 2020-2021 school year! Whether you are just joining our community or have been a long-time member of our Launch family, we are confident that this is going to be a great year together due to the dedication, collaboration and overwhelmingly positive spirit that our community possesses!
In light of the uncertainty around COVID-19 and the unwavering commitment we have to our community's safety and health, we have decided to make a shift from the hybrid model we presented to families in June to a mostly remote learning model. This was a difficult decision and certainly no model will be perfect, but we are confident that with the model we have designed, students will be able to learn and grow!
We are reaching out today with a survey to collect accurate information about every family's needs in order to support all Launch students and their families.
General Education and ICT students: ALL instruction will be online from 9am-3pm with breaks for lunch and movement. Students will have 3-4 hours of LIVE lesson instruction each day and will be required to sign into live lessons.
For all on-line classes, teachers will be teaching LIVE. This means that students must log into the computer for their class at the scheduled time. Attendance will be taken for every class and students are required to attend, just as if they were attending class in-person. Attendance will impact your child’s grade and while excused absences will of course be taken into consideration, unexcused absences will not.
Parents can elect to send their child to the building each day if they need support with supervision, internet, or if they feel that their child will benefit from learning in the building. In the survey at the end of this email, you will be asked if you would like your child to be part of In Building Supervision.
At least once a week, while the weather is still warm enough (September-November), we will hold outdoor activities with clear social distancing, masks, and safety measures for each grade. Students will come to school from 1:15-3pm and participate in physical education instruction, social-emotional learning, community meetings and celebrations. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in after school clubs throughout the start of the year. Having the opportunity to see their teachers and classmates in person will support a sense of belonging in the Launch community and will provide the opportunity for all students to get in-person physical education instruction. In the survey at the end of this email, you will be asked about your comfort with sending your child to Launch for outdoor activities.
Multi-Subject (12:1:1) students:
Classes will take place IN the building in our two largest classrooms on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesdays will be at home for virtual learning and homework assignments. Parents can elect to have their child join the class virtually.
Health and Safety
ALL students learning in the building will be required to wear masks, have temperature checks in the morning, and participate in hand-washing and social distancing measures throughout the day.
Students learning from home will be able to pick up meals each day at the school.
Students learning at school will be able to get their breakfast and lunch at school as usual.
Computer and Internet
All students will receive a Launch computer to take home and, whenever we can, we will do our best to support them with internet connectivity. In the survey at the end of this email, you will be asked for your preference about how to receive your child’s new Launch computer.
Below you will find a link to our reopening survey where you will select your preferences for this school year. Please note that all Launch students will receive a computer that they will keep at home and any Launch student who selects to learn from home and needs internet connection will receive one from Launch.
Please complete this survey in the next 48 hours. SURVEY LINK (https://forms.gle/ABA4MEccrGnFt5fH7)

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
The first day of school for Launch students is Monday, August 24th.
From August 24th-September 4th we will be holding Launch Orientation for ALL students (returning and new) in ALL grades. Students will be getting to know their new teachers, their new classmates, and what our community is doing to make this year engaging and motivational! We are looking into outdoor activities to supplement some of the on-line activities we have planned. We will be taking attendance starting on August 24.
We are setting aside a longer-than-usual orientation window to help make sure we are building strong relationships, supporting students in feeling like they belong, and setting up our entire community for success this year!
Our 2020-2021 school year calendar is in the works! We have been waiting to hear from the DOE on their calendar. To that end, we plan on publishing a draft of our calendar in time for our webinar with the hopes that we’ll hear more about the DOE calendar in the coming weeks.
If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please reach out to us! We are your partners!
We hope this communication finds you and your family safe and healthy this summer! We can’t wait to get our 2020-21 school year started with you and your children! While there is a lot of uncertainty in our city and country, our Launch community has come together as we always do to ensure that our students will continue to have an unparalleled educational experience. Thank you to everyone who completed the Launch Return-to-School Survey. Hearing your preferences and questions helped us create a plan that we are confident will help our entire community achieve more than we thought possible this year!
Based on your feedback and that of our staff, we have been working on creating a reopening plan that focuses on safety, equity and student engagement. We are thrilled to share that our entire 2020-2021 Remote-Hybrid Plan is up on our website - please take a moment to read the details about the plan. When you go to the homepage of our website, click on the 2020-2021 School Year tab in the navigation bar at the top and select any of the pages in the menu. You can also click here.
Clear communication is a big priority for us and we always want to make sure that all of our families can access the information we share. We are excited to announce that our entire website can now be translated into several languages! If your family speaks a language other than English, please check the Communications page after we send each email to find the email translated into your home language. (www.launchschool.org -> 2020-2021 School Year ->Communications) If your home language is not listed, please contact Alexis Rubin (718-715-1191) so that we can add it.
Please join us for our mandatory Back-to-School Parent Webinar
We would like 100% of our families to participate in our webinar to receive important information about our plans for the upcoming school year as well as have questions answered live. We are offering a morning and evening session and the webinar will be recorded to ensure that ALL families can obtain the information.
For our Spanish-speaking families - we will be holding a Spanish language version of our webinar later on in the week. Please look out for the date in an upcoming communication!
